Should You Get an AI Website? What It Is, What It Costs and What Can Go Wrong

AI this, AI that. Every week someone at a networking event asks me, "Should I get an AI website?" Usually right after an ad promised them a whole website in 30 seconds.

It's a fair question, and the honest answer is: it depends which "AI website" you mean. That phrase covers three completely different things, with different costs, different risks and very different results.

Full transparency before we start: the site you're reading right now was built with AI in the loop. So are the websites we build for clients at JDS1 now. I've spent a lot of time on every side of this, and this post is everything I wish someone had laid out for me.

The short version

  • An "AI website" is any site where AI does a big part of the building. It can mean a drag-and-drop builder, an app that writes code for you, or a professional using AI as a power tool.
  • AI website builders (Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy and others) are cheap and fast. Great for a simple site you'll manage yourself.
  • "Vibe coding" tools (Lovable, Bolt, v0 and others) write real code from your description. Powerful, but security and maintenance are on you.
  • A custom build with AI help costs more up front, but you get strategy, SEO and someone accountable.
  • Google doesn't penalize a site for using AI. It penalizes content made mainly to game rankings, however it was made.
  • The right choice depends on one question: is your website supposed to get you customers, or just exist?

What "AI website" actually means

1. AI website builders: describe it, it builds it, you edit it

This is what most ads mean. You answer a few questions or chat with an assistant, and the builder generates pages, text and images on its platform. Then you tweak it in a dashboard.

  • Wix: "Create a website with AI by describing what you want. Customize anything by hand or with Aria, your built-in AI agent."
  • GoDaddy: lets you "Switch between AI prompts for larger updates and manual editing when you want to fine-tune."
  • Hostinger: "just describe your idea and let AI do the rest," with a chat-based mode for building by conversation.
  • Squarespace: built-in AI tools to "generate professional content," included on every plan.
  • Durable: promises to get you "online in 30 seconds," bundled with a CRM, booking and marketing tools.
  • Framer: more design-focused. Its AI agent "creates editable pages, sections, copy, and visuals directly in your project."

Best for: simple brochure sites, new businesses and people who like tinkering in a dashboard.

2. Vibe coding: describe it, AI writes the actual code

This one's newer. The term came from AI researcher Andrej Karpathy in early 2025: "There's a new kind of coding I call 'vibe coding', where you fully give in to the vibes, embrace exponentials, and forget that the code even exists." (Andrej Karpathy on X)

With tools like Lovable, Bolt and v0, you describe what you want in plain English and AI writes real code. You can build a website, or even a full app with logins and a database.

Best for: prototypes, internal tools and tech-comfortable people who'll test what they build. It's incredible for getting an idea on screen fast. It's risky when you forget "the code even exists" and put real customer data in it (more on that below).

3. Custom build with AI assistance: a pro with a power tool

This is what we do. Before marketing, I spent almost two decades running major construction projects. Nail guns didn't replace carpenters. They let good carpenters build faster. AI is the nail gun.

A professional uses AI to move faster, but the parts that make a site work still come from experience: the strategy, the page structure for SEO, the copy built from your real services and reviews, security, testing and someone who picks up the phone when something needs changing.

Best for: businesses that need the website to generate leads, rank locally and keep working without babysitting.

What does an AI website cost?

These are ballparks. Prices change constantly and promos come and go, so click through and check current pricing yourself.

OptionTypical costWhat's usually includedWhat's usually on you
AI website builderFree to start. Roughly $10–$50/month for most small-business plans; higher tiers can run over $100/month. See Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy, Hostinger.Hosting, security updates for the platform, templates, AI writing toolsYour time, your copy, your SEO, every future change
Vibe coding toolFree to start. Roughly $25–$30/month for paid plans (e.g. Bolt, v0), with usage credits that can run out as you make changesThe AI that writes code, often simple hostingSecurity, testing, hosting setup, fixing what breaks, and your time
Custom build with AI helpA one-time project fee (anywhere from a few thousand to tens of thousands, depending on who and what) plus monthly hosting and careStrategy, design, copy, technical SEO, testing, a team accountable for itApproving the work and running your business

For transparency, ours: a JDS1 High-Performance Website is $6,500 flat, no page-count pricing, plus $55/month for hosting and maintenance (free with any ongoing SEO plan).

Which one fits you?

Answer these honestly and the choice usually makes itself.

1. What's the website's job?

  • "People just need to see we're real" → an AI builder is probably enough.
  • "The website should bring in leads and calls" → you need strategy and SEO, not just pages. Lean custom, or a builder plus real SEO help.

2. Who's going to maintain it?

  • You, and you like dashboards → AI builder.
  • You, and you're technical → vibe coding can work, if you test it.
  • Not you → a managed custom build.

3. How big will it get?

  • A handful of pages is fine anywhere.
  • Lots of service pages, a real blog, multiple locations or custom features → builders can start to feel cramped, and vibe-coded projects get harder to manage as they grow.

4. Do you handle customer information?

  • If people log in, pay you, or submit health, financial or personal details through your site, security isn't optional. Hosted builders take care of their own platform. With vibe-coded apps, that job is yours.

5. How much is a lead worth to you?

  • If one new customer pays for the site, the cheapest option isn't automatically the least expensive.

The risks nobody puts in the ad

Security (especially with vibe coding)

AI writes code fast. It doesn't always write it safely. In Veracode's 2025 research across more than 100 AI models, "45% of code samples failed security tests and introduced OWASP Top 10 security vulnerabilities into the code." (Veracode — 2025 GenAI Code Security Report)

A real example: in 2025, a researcher disclosed a vulnerability (CVE-2025-48757) where Lovable-generated projects with weak database security rules could expose data, including "Personally Identifiable Information—PII—and credentials," to outside attackers. (Matt Palmer — CVE-2025-48757)

That doesn't mean "never use these tools." It means if real customer data goes in, someone who knows security needs to check it before it goes live.

Lock-in

Most AI builders host your site on their platform. That's convenient, but moving to something else later often means rebuilding instead of copying files over. Before you commit, ask: Do I own my content and domain, and what happens if I leave?

Looking like everyone else

AI builders generate from the same patterns, so many AI-built sites sound alike: "We're passionate about quality and customer service." Google's guidance asks whether content "clearly demonstrate[s] first-hand expertise," and generic copy doesn't. Replace it with your real services, your real reviews and your real answers. (Google Search Central — Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content)

Confident mistakes

AI will happily write the wrong hours, a service you don't offer or a claim you can't back up. Read every word before you publish. If you're in a regulated field like healthcare, legal or finance, be extra careful.

Nobody's accountable

When the site breaks at 9pm the night before your big promotion, who fixes it? With a builder it's you and a support chat. With vibe coding it's you and the AI. With a managed build it's a phone number.

Does an AI website hurt your SEO?

Not by itself. Google cares about why content exists, not what tool made it. In Google's own words: "If you use automation, including AI-generation, to produce content for the primary purpose of manipulating search rankings, that's a violation of our spam policies." (Google Search Central — Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content)

So using AI to build faster is fine. Using AI to crank out 150 near-identical pages to game Google is not. (That's a whole topic. Here's my post on doorway pages.)

What actually moves the needle hasn't changed: a fast, well-structured site, pages built around real searches, your Google Business Profile and reviews. (How to Get Found Online, and How to Show Up in AI Search.)

My take

AI has made building websites faster and cheaper for everybody, and that's a good thing. For a simple site, an AI builder is a perfectly smart choice, and I'll tell you that on a call.

But "AI can build a website" was never really the question. The question is whether your website gets you found, earns trust and turns visitors into customers, and keeps doing it without you babysitting it. That part still takes strategy, experience and someone accountable. That's why we built the JDS1 High-Performance Website the way we did: AI as the power tool, people doing the thinking.

Your next step

Before you buy anything, write down three things: what your website's job is, who'll maintain it, and what one new customer is worth to you. Those answers will point you to the right option.
